Appleoosa - Chapter 1

Twenty-five years after the end of the Great Dragon war saw Equestria battling the Draconic Alliance for pony survival against a deranged elder dragon. Now only three separate elder dragon run city-states are all that remain of the once powerful alliance. Yet even after so long there are wounds that run deep that could threaten that peace in more ways then one.

Kroll
Appleoosa - Sheriff's Office

Kroll shrank further back into a corner of the sheriff's office as it began to grow more and more crowded. He didn't know what was going on anymore, and was beginning to wondered what had compelled him to not walk right out the door as soon as he received the latter half of his pay. It seemed like everyone else had the situation under control anyway, making the mercenary wonder even further what he was still doing aside from taking up space in an already-packed building. With a sigh he lifted up his helmet's metal visor and sat down beside his gear, deciding to use this lull in time to make sure his arsenal was in proper working order in the event he was further needed.

The tercel glanced up every now and then as he worked, taking note of the regal presence that currently occupied the room. He remembered the stories that he had been told growing up among the veterans of the Alliance of the slaughter that the princesses wrought upon their comrades and the devastation they left in their wake. To be sharing a room with individuals as reviled as they were made the tercel's stomach turn violently beneath his armor, but he kept it to himself as he continued to perform maintenance on his weapons.

Bronze "Blondie" Scales
Appleoosa - Sheriff's Office

"Now now, my dear Iris. Let's not be too hasty." The mob boss spoke up a bit hastily. She sounded nervous. "That wouldn't look too good, would it? How different would that be from your little charm that you had put on war criminals? I'm sure that won't sound good for the regular thieves, the crown making deals with others only under pain of death. Then who looks like the villain? Awfully draconian if you ask me."

"And anyhow, if I die, there goes your only bargaining chip, and your last chance at peaceful exchange for the Element. It'd be a flag for an all-out war between Equestria's criminal underground, and Equestria's law enforcement." She added with a smirk. Blondie made a motion as if she had a gun against her head, and pretended to pull the trigger. "And surely in a situation like this, regardless of whoever that would end it, the blame would fall upon one of you."

Her expression turned into one of sour annoyance. "...Although I'd like to keep my head. I still haven't had that bubble bath yet."

Noting the princess didn’t shoot down Iris’ idea out of hoof nor did Grand Master Twilight the mare remembered the reactions Martingale’s actions garnered during her childhood. “Or myself, and a few hoof picked ponies take her to Las Pegasus to make the trade. Depending on what terms we have to set here, we could be moving in a few hours.” Neither the Twilight or Celestia spoke up they merely turned back towards Blondie. Beyond them she could see her uncle giving her a slight nod.

"I could agree to that." Blondie said, nodding. "Now, my demands..."

The mare had an air of seriousness now, getting straight to the point. "First, I will not agree to anything involving coercion, manipulation, or control. So, no toxic pills, none of that Weight of Empathy or any other magic you've used to chain a poor soul. Although I'll challenge you to try it, it won't work. No chains, ropes, or yokes. The deal that I'm proposing is that you get your Element whole and hearty, safe and sound, so long as I'm in the same state."

"Second, I'd like my full set of armaments that I brought." The boss indicated towards her discarded bag and clothes that laid a fair distance away. "They are mine after all, and I happen to like that dress."

"And, in lieu of that last caveat, I'd also like the ponies you're picking for escort be experienced. Not just in combat, also in field. Yes, although your daughter does have talent in swordplay, I believe her hardheadedness was one of the main causes of why we're in this situation currently." Blondie indicated to Breaker, in referral to how he ended up on the ground. "This should be a good experience though, wouldn't you agree?"

"Now, my fourth request. I'm the one that leads this little escort. I refuse to be Death Marched all the way back, simply because you're all anxious about the Element. You give me a deadline, and I can make sure that we meet it, but we will be going at the pace that I dictate. I assure you that you will get the Element of Harmony back." Blondie was now referring to the Princess and Twilight.

"And my last request." She continued, now relaxing. "Is some dinner. Not prison food, something at a nice restaurant so I may get to know my escorts."

"I'd be willing to pay, but It'd be very generous if the tab was covered by the Royal funds, no?" Blondie added with a smile.

Longshot
Appleloosa - Sheriff Office

Longshot was not comfortable with Iris' suggestion but if it was necessary... He was quietly glad when Silver had offered an alternative. At least, until Blondie started speaking.

"So let me get this straight. You don't want us to treat you as a prisoner. You want us to rearm you. You want to lead the expedition. You'd like dinner with the ponies you'll be travling with, and while you're at it you'd like the crown to pay for it."

Longshot leaned forward with a scowl, losing the lighthearted tone in his voice. "You stole from us, if you'll recall. You're the one who needs to prove their trustworthiness, a question I posed that I never got an answer to I'd like to note, and yet you ask us to treat you like our best pal had wronged us. You asked me ealier who Trisha was? She was a Talon; the top griffin mercenary outfit. She traveled with me and my group for a long time, until she nearly got us all killed out of her selfishness. We gave her the kind of considerations you're asking for. Because she was a close friend who'd made a mistake. You are someone we hardly know, who we met because you wronged us. You don't get that kind of treatment just because your demeanor is friendly. Your actions have to back it up."

The unicorn leaned back again, adressing the rest of the room in a more professional manner. "I think the idea of sending ponies out with her is a good one. I even like the idea of not binding her in anyway, as a show of good faith on our part. The party we send with her can keep hold of her weapons and give them back to her if they think she's earned it. She most certainly shouldn't led the expedition, and the dinner suggestion is just insulting. That's where I stand, at least."
We are what we repeatedly do.

Silvershine
Appleoosa – Sheriff office

Getting ready to speak up after Longshot, she sees her uncle just start laughing. Not sure if it was a good sign, the mare closes her mouth watching as the old stallion falls to his knees laughter rocking his body. “Oh this is to much, dinner and leadership of this expedition oh this is great!” Looking as if he’d say more the stallion’s laughter slows a hoof wiping a tear away as he motions towards Twilight.

Allow me to make a counter proposal, first no magic, manipulation, or bindings, they won’t be necessary because you’re not going to run you find this whole thing to amusing to let it besmirch your name. ” Looking stern the former element doesn’t slow down, though she does start moving towards the cell. “ Second, we’ll return your effects because you won’t use them. It’s not worth the headache or problems attacking any pony with you will be worth. Third, Silvershine, daughter of Mustang Magus, and niece to Balthier Breaker is in charge.” Moving up to the bars the mare showed no hesitation even though Silver could feel her heart moving into her throat at the last part. “If you agree we’ll get the accomedation’s changed and look into something better for dinner.” Suddenly the lavender mare smiles widely. “That is unless you’d like to still haggle over this, because I’m sure Mustang would love to be put in charge of this expedition. I’m sure your well aware of his,” pausing the mare starts to turn to walk away. . “opinion of organized crime and the damage they’ve done to him and his family.”

Blondie pretended to think, but it was obvious to all that she was satisfied. "My dear, I am absolutely delighted we have an understanding! Your nickname certainly does fit you well, Miss Sparkle. Now that everything is in order, all that's left is a few loose ends, and we may finally be able to move onto more amicable topics."

"Silvershine, seeing you are the head of this little excursion." The mob boss said, now addressing the other Earth Pony in the room. "Who are you currently considering bringing? I'd like to request you bring along your little sniper friend."

"Now, Longshot if I may..." She said, with a serious note embedded within a kind tone. "You certainly do have a head on your shoulders. From the way you talk, you remind me very much of one of my Rookies. A survivor and a fighter. And you're right, words are empty without actions to back them up with."

"But I'd like to point out, that you may not know who I am, but certainly everyone else in this room does. Even if this is the first time most of them have actually met me in the flesh." The mafioso finished with, as she waited for someone to finally open the cell door. "Longshot, you seem to be looking at me like some common bandit you've tangled with before, but I assure you I have never been a common bandit."

Longshot snorted. "No, you're a rather uncommon bandit. That's just a more dangerous kind because you're unpredictable."

He turned to Silver, "Whether you're bringing me along or not, I have someone in mind you might like to bring."

Longshot snorted. "No, you're a rather uncommon bandit. That's just a more dangerous kind because you're unpredictable."

He turned to Silver, "Whether you're bringing me along or not, I have someone in mind you might like to bring."

"Oh! Oh! That's me! He means me!"

"Sweet Sisters!" Longshot exclaimed, before turning to see the purple pegasus hovering outside the window. "Lucky? What in Tartarus...?"

Lucky shrugged her shoulders. "Oh, sorry! It's just, I saw you come in here after all the commotion earlier. I was going to wait until you were done with whatever's going on here, but you mentioned me, so I thought I'd say hi." She waved to the crowd inside the sheriff's office. "Hello! I'm Lucky Find!" She flashed them a grin, then addressed Longshot again.

"So, planning to counter an 'uncommon' bandit with an 'odd' ex-bandit? Count me in! Uh ... If that's okay with everyone else, of course."

The poor unicorn introduced his face to his forehoof. "How do you even know if I was talking about you? I-" Longshot sighed, realizing he was just being stubborn. "Nevermind. Everyone, this is Lucky. Who it would look really bad for if she was caught spying on one of the princesses given her recent incarceration," he said, adding that last part with a pointed frown toward Lucky.

Oh look an older less chaotic Prank,” the words where muttered under her breath, turning towards Blondie she wasn’t sure how she’d ended up in charge of this mess. Though she wouldn’t put it past her uncle to have done it as repayment for the earlier unpleasantness. Anger management later, focus on the task before you. It seemed like her anger and issues from her youth would constantly haunt her.

Okay Blondie, Longshot, Kroll, Isis if she can be spared and apparently Lucky,” glancing at princess she received only a nod, “will be joining us on this trip. We’ll take an airship in the morning and be in Las Pegasus within a few hours and we can get this all put behind us. That agreeable?

Blondie was taken aback by the mare's sudden appearance, but her expression quickly turned into one of amusement.

"My, a Lucky Find indeed." She chuckled. The boss simply nodded to Silvershine's question.

Kroll cast an uninterested glance up at the latest arrival, letting out nothing more than a sigh as he resumed his work. Hearing Silvershine's question the tercel looked back up, giving the mare a curt nod in response. Even though a great deal of discussion had come about, the mercenary didn't see anything that he could weigh in on that the others hadn't voiced their thoughts on already.

Iris considered volunteering for the trip. She was hesitant about the deal and knew that Blondie was a slippery criminal, but she also knew that getting the element was of utmost importance, even if it was risky. But she wasn't a totally free pony this week...

"I wish I could go with you Silver, but my family is in town and I do have some limits to disappointing my mother, and you've met my sister, there's no way I can worm my way out of spending much more time with them. I'll make sure that everyone is well supplied." she looked at Blondie and then at the Princesses. "With non-lethals of course. I hope that it's not too much against the deal to have Longshot, Lucky and Silver armed with tranqs "

"Oh? Is that so?" Blondie said with surprise. "The one pony who has actually been involved with working with my business, the most qualified for the job, and yet she isn't coming on this little mission."

"...Are you sure you are qualified for your job? It sounds like you have quite the investment in your family..." She added, eyebrow raised.

"Which is just as it should be. Don't worry about this Iris, we can handle it. I'll keep my own armaments, as always, but I wouldn't mind a supply of tranquilizers. Now if you don't mind, I never had a chance to pay my respects at the memorial. Contact me via a radio if you need me, alright?" Longshot waved his PipBuck to emphasise the point before turning to leave.

Lucky Find
Appleloosa - Sheriff's Office

Lucky nodded to Longshot as he walked past her, giving him a sad smile and a quick "See you later!", before letting herself into the building.

Once inside, she bowed to Princess Celestia and Twilight. "Sorry about eavesdropping, your highness, Miss Sparkle. I promise, I wasn't trying to listen, I just couldn't help overhearing the raised voices." She snickered to herself. "Won't be the first thing I've found that I wasn't supposed to..."

After she felt her bow had lasted long enough, Lucky brought her head up and smiled sheepishly at the rest of the ponies in the room. "Well, this has been a lot more awkward than I expected."

"Longshot's been talking up the PSA to me for the past couple of months. He said it might be a place for somepony with my skills to do some good in the world. Um, I think I heard everypony's names..." Lucky turned to face each of them in turn. "Miss Blondie, it's nice to meet you face-to-face. I always did prefer dealing with your branch of the Mafia. Let's see, you must be Iris, love the dress by the way. Kroll sounds like a griffon name, so that must be Mr. Serious with all the cool guns in the corner. And you're in charge, so you must be Silver." Lucky gave Silvershine a jaunty salute. "Looking forward to working with you all!"

Silvershine
Appleoosa – Sheriff office

Returning a nod to Lucky’s salute the mare looks to the princess and the grand master at her side. “Oh my little pony, every pony has their skills, though I’m more impressed that you managed to sneak past the rather dour door guard.” Even given the situation there was a bit of mirth to the Princess voice. “He’s rather eagle eyed, or you’ve a silver tongue. That said, Miss Silvershine.

Nodding quickly the mare points towards Lucky, “Okay first things first, Lucky, check into the local hotels and see who’s got an opening. Kroll keep an eye on Blondie, I’m going to go through her effects just so we know what she’s got.” Moving toward the pile she tried not to think about the fact the Princess was remaining within the office.

Mustang Magus – Dragon war veteran and business pony - Old Pc
Appleoosa – Outside Sherrif’s office

Watching Longshot step outside the old stallion steps forward partially cringing at the creak of leather and light sounds of metal sliding across metal his armor made. It might ruin his ability to be quiet, but when ones daughters rather forcefully demand you take better care of yourself you either listen or deal with the consequences. The fact one was an inventor and the other an Alicorn made the choice rather easy. “Longshot,” the stallion calls out, “you got a few minutes? Got something I wanted to talk to you about and figured I’d have to track you down later this week.”

Kroll's head snapped up from his work when he heard Silvershine say his name, nodding begrudgingly as he heard his new orders. With a stifled groan the tercel reassembled his weapons and re-positioned himself in front of Bronze Scale's cell, keeping his rifle at the ready in case she tried anything. As tempted as he was to do otherwise the mercenary kept his beak shut as he kept a watchful eye on the prisoner, his tail swaying impatiently behind him.

Longshot stopped and turned back. "Mustang. Whatever it is, you know I'll probably do it, but if it could've waited a week can it wait just a bit? Or at least trot and talk. It's..." He turned around and kept going, headed toward the memorial. "Gotta make time for those left behind every so often. I'm sure you know that."
