Appleoosa - Chapter 1

Twenty-five years after the end of the Great Dragon war saw Equestria battling the Draconic Alliance for pony survival against a deranged elder dragon. Now only three separate elder dragon run city-states are all that remain of the once powerful alliance. Appleoosa - Chapter 1

Postby MagusZeal » Mon Aug 10, 2015 12:26 am

Once a small frontier town, Appleoosa was decimated and traded claw and hooves numerous times during the Great Dragon War. No place witnessed more bloodshed, heroics, and deviltry then Appleoosa, though now twenty-five years later the scars of the war are all, but invisible to those who weren't there. Now a major trading hub, goods bound west to Talons Fall, the J Works, Canterlot, or Torlopolis pass through the railway station that stands amid the myraid of warehouses.

Princess Celestia
Appleoosa - Town square

Stepping onto the wooden platform Princess Celestia looks over the crowd of ponies, buffalo, diamond dogs, griffons, some zebra's and a smattering of younger dragons spread out before her, even if you'd told her this would be possible twenty years ago she'd have scoffed at the idea. Now as she walks across the platform to the podium and it's assortment of microphones she could only marvel at how things had turned out the banner behind her proclaiming the twenty-fifth anniversary to the end of the war was only part of why she was here this day. In her wake an assortment of ponies follows her atop the stage, some the new bearers of the Elements of Harmony, others instrumental in Darkfang's fall, though some were still missing even after all these years their final fate yet to be written, and her ever faithful one time student Twilight Sparkle, now the Grandmaster of the Star Warden’s, stood nearby. The one time supreme leader of Equestria's forces generally tried to avoid any talk of the war, but if asked she would plod along, and that’s exactly why she moved to the princess’ side now. Pausing at the podium she nods once, the signal to for those in the broadcaster booths to wrap up before she was to begin her speech. Since the wars end technology had exploded, with the once cumbersome teletype falling away to let the radio that now connected all of Equestria and even beyond to takes its place.

Finishing her mental countdown the mare of the sun gazes past the gathering of various races and the rebuilt town of Appleoosa, “Today we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on the plains surrounding Appleoosa twenty five years ago. With that last battle those remaining elder dragons within the Alliance sued for peace no longer wishing to carry on the bloodshed of their fallen leader.” There were more than a few grim nods from those veterans of the war present no matter the side they fought on. “Yet, were it not for actions of a few on these plains some two years previous that armistice would have never happened, nor the peace accords worked out over the next six months with the leaders of the Alliance.” Given the subject matter the mare was pleased not to see anypony cheering as she paused.

The taking of any creatures life is not something anypony wishes to see, yet given what the Draconic Alliances leadership was, for there to be any hope of peace the elder Darkfang would have to be removed and sadly after many months of deliberation only one solution could be found.” Feeling more than seeing or hearing Twilight's shifting next to her Celestia tries to ignore the other mares’ reluctance to entertain the subject over the years, or her instances on not speaking of that day publicly. While it was true the Daughers of Darkfang were a problem, the group was unlikely to be able to strike out at them. Nor did she believe revealing what happened all those years ago would drive any other beings to their banner. “On that day so many years ago I and Princess Luna gave that order, and within an hour a team of extremely brave ponies answered the call. By morning they’d come up with a daring plan that they were confident would work, though they worried about the how to get Darkfang into the open. It was then that Luna and I decided we could not let them take this risk alone, as we already knew what Darkfang wished more than anything else.” Saying nothing of the hour’s long arguments Twilight and even most of the team had put to the royal sisters the mare of the sun continued on her eyes sweeping over the crowd.

The target of both myself and Luna would be too great for the elder to pass up given her rage, within an hour we west bound on a train to recently liberated Appleoosa. Hastily arranged and with information leaked to the Alliance we knew we could ask no pony else to risk so much if we would not do the same.” Pausing the mare slowly looks over those gathered before her, seeing concern on many of their faces warmed her hear even though some remained unreadable. “By dawn we had our confirmation that Darkfang was on her way at the head of a force unlike any we’d ever seen before or sense, and evening she was dead and the plains surrounding Appleoosa lay soaked with the blood of the dead and dying. To say it was an easy fought battle would belittle what those ponies did that day. A few were gravely injured that day, others became lost to us, and even my sister and I were unable to avoid harm. Luna lost her eye that day, while assisting them and I suffered a number of lesser wounds.” Ignoring the gasps and murmuring Celestia continues on even as the phantom pain of Darkfang’s claws rip across her belly. “And while I wish I could tell you who these brave selfless ponies were, I cannot, no I will not risk their safety or that of their love ones less they should choose to unmask themselves on their own terms

What I can do for them though is this.”Her horn glowing quickly the current behind her falls away to reveal the bronze statue teleported in during her speech. A trio of ponies stand upon an outcropping, each representing one of their kind. In the pegasus hooves a rifle is held at the ready, while the unicorn seems to be summoning a shield of before them while the earth pony stands at serenely her hooves resting on a sword. “This statue I dedicate to the memory of those who made this peace possible, to those brave souls who risked it all to allow us to work hoof in claw with our one time foes to forge a better future for all.” Stopping the mare all but signals her speech done as the crowd stamps and claps as their race allows. Ignoring the calls from new reporters the Princess of Equestria makes her way down from the stage sad to see that a few of those heroes had not shown up to the dedication.

Marionette Strings
Appleoosa - Town Square

Marionette Strings is not a normal pony by the standard definition if there even is one, Showing up with a Carriage which is now parked to the side of the town square giving a few ponies who decided to climb up on top a good view of the ceremony. Dressed in a brightly colored outfit and a wooden painted puppet sitting on top of her head Marionette watched the whole ceremony, having arrived a few days early for it. She waves siliently while the puppet on her head lets out a cheer startling anypony who was paying attention to the mare. She was too young to have fought in the war, but her parents had. She Stamps her hooves as the princess finishes her speech and unveils the statue. She smiles softly, thinking to herself how her parents were considered heroes in the eyes of pony folk. The puppet pats her head as Marie pulls it's strings. Smiling up at her puppet she wipes her eyes. Mustn't let herself get too chocked up. She Looks back at the Princess as she steps down at least everypony here is happy.

Bronze "Blondie" Scales
Appleoosa - Fritters and Grits

Very close to the town square, there was a rather popular two story restaurant located, well known for it's apple cuisine. Apple fritters, apple pie, apple crumble, you name any sort of apple related pastry, they had it, and there were plenty of popular experimental choices as well. And for a day like this, the owner and the rest of the cooking staff were especially excited since their second floor balcony had a very good view of the town square. It was bound to have a large amount of reservations, and sales were going to be through the roof. In fact, the entire second floor had been reserved by someone named 'Goldilocks'.

But although the entire second floor, with a capacity of over 75 ponies, only 8 ponies sat there that day. 5 of them were sitting together, smoking, drinking, eating and generally making merry and horsing around a little while throwing around some cards, while a little ways away a party of 2 was sitting together while another was watching the ceremony keenly off the balcony. And although they didn't order much for a group to reserve the entirety of a restaurant floor, they did ask for them to foot the bill of everypony on the first floor, as well as cater to the crowd too. The owner certainly didn't mind, they had paid in the largest bag of bits that he had ever seen in his entire life.

Blondie really didn't have to do all this, she could probably had just reserved two tables for the eight of them, and the whole paying for other's meals was a little overkill as well. But the Las Pegasus crime boss was in a good mood today, some of her 'employees' had just gotten a really good deal on iron and various other metals, and the expected profits off it were very high. Heck, you could maybe even call it a steal. She had laughed at that joke when the pony that was reporting on the heist had told her that, and had been using it a couple times herself. Besides, the privacy would allow for some of the boys to let loose a little bit, and not feel like they had to watch themselves while not on home turf.

However, despite the rather happy atmosphere, one of their numbers was still rather grumpy and wary. Blondie's right hand mare, the short, and equally short-tempered underboss, Red "Firecracker" Flare. Even the whisky she had ordered her did nothing to calm her impatient hoof-tapping.

"I don't get the whole appeal of this anniversary ceremony crap or whatever." She grumbled, glancing out towards the balcony. Although she said that, it was clear she wanted to know why they were there in the first place, but she didn't want to question her boss. Blondie knew that, and although she even said it was fine for her to be questioned once in a while, old habits died hard for some. "Big whoop, we killed a buncha dragons by throwin' a buncha bodies at 'em hard enough. Anyone coulda done it if they had enough soldiers ta throw around. I betcha that our family alone coulda taken one of them dragons on if we really wanted ta."

"Now now, Flare, let them have their celebrations. The war lasted quite a long time, and a lot of ponies had to deal with a lot of trouble, even if Las Pegasus was relatively untouched." Blondie said while taking a sip of her appletini, almost a little amused by Firecracker's grouchiness. "And our family may be large, but a single adult dragon could raze a city to the ground entirely on their own if they wanted to, and they had to take down an elder dragon. Give them a little credit, it was a pretty big accomplishment for them to take down their head honcho."

"Yeah, well... Give me a gun, and a load of bullets, and I can take one down pronto." The crimson unicorn replied, making a motion like she was firing a rifle. "BLAM, shot to the eye, another in the mouth-"

"Yes yes, and then you'd climb right into his stomach, and stab him right in the heart through his lower intestine." The boss chuckled, very entertained by Firecracker's confidence, and even more so at the indignant 'Of course!' that followed. "But anyhow, we're not just here for the celebrations"

"We're not?" Flare asked.

"Not at all, nope. Part of it is to pay some respect to the 'boss' of Equestria." Flare snorted at the irony, and Blondie couldn't help but smile at what she said too. "Even if we are undermining her authority and wishes with everything we do, power still bears to be respected. But the main reason..."

With a quick shuffle through her bag, she took out a bunch of fliers and plopped them on the table. Normal travel brochures, but with that, Firecracker understood immediately.

"Ahhhh, I see. Recruitment right?" She nodded. "More soldiers never hurt."

Blondie nodded in agreement. "It certainly never did. Big crowds like this attract all sorts of types, especially those with quick horns and quiet hooves. And even if we don't get any more hooves within our syndicate, at least our casinos will be getting more advertisement. I'm sure there's plenty a thief that'll lose their spoils trying to get some winnings."

Suddenly there was a roar of applause and stomping, and most of the group looked towards the balcony rather instinctively reacting to the sudden noise. But the card players went back to their game, but the two officers were watching the rather large and stout stallion on the balcony stomping, clapping, and hollering the loudest.

"'sides, Shorty likes sentimental stuff like this. Still sleeps with a teddie bear y'know?" She said, laughing. Flare sighed in exasperation, reluctantly letting her shoulders relax, and levitating herself another gulp.

Prism
Appleoosa - Town square

Prism stood near her family at the ceremony, seemingly dressed to the nines in a sheer sparkling dress and elegant necklace, though only the necklace was real. The dress was a Rarity design, but Prism only ever saw the concept art for it, the dress was never constructed of anything more than light and shadow.

Prism had never seen the war and she'd been shielded from most of the effects, but she could still feel a swelling of pride when she knew that her parents were included with the groups that were memorialized. The occasion was somber, and Prism knew that it fit the occasion, but she was longing for when the festivities would break out afterward. Appleoosa was known for good food and great parties, even if both were more rustic than the refined Canterlot fare she was used to. But rustic parties could be the most fun, and there were a lot of ponies around with cause to celebrate. The war might have torn so much apart, but it also brought together a lot of ponies in the aftermath and Prism saw her exsistance from that as something to be happy about.

Aether

Appleoosa - Town Square

Aether patted one of her hooves into the dirt with the crowd, her eyes wandering from face to face through red tinted sunglasses, the brim of her hat keeping the sun from her brow. It's a good thing the crowd was sizable, plenty of faces in which to hide her own. Though after twenty-seven or so years, her face had long been forgotten by those old enough to remember the posters.

Finally her gaze found it's way to it's mark, the wavy hair, the grey coat... there was no mistaking this mare, she'd know that face anywhere. Age couldn't hide her sister from her. But even more interesting was the stallion beside her. Aether had seen this stallion somewhere before, she just couldn't place it. Flawless white coat, and a purple and pink mane held together by beautiful patterns of glass. Aether looked on at the pair. Yes, they were definitely an item... Aether couldn't believe it. Renew... with a stallion... things really had changed. Aether moved sideways through the crowd circling the couple from a distance.

She came to an immediate sight as something small dodge in between the two, something white, something equine... oh could it be? Oh yes, a filly. It took her entire being to hold back an ear-to-ear grin as she watched the little filly chase what appeared to be a butterfly around the two. This was just too perfect, everything she would ever need, just laid bare before her.

Aether watched on for a few more minutes before the filly gave chase to the butterfly into the crowd. The mare quickly made way to intercept the child.

Sugar Rush - NPC

Appleoosa - Town Square

Sugar followed the butterfly, bouncing in between the ponies, her multicolored hair flopping around with every step. Squeezing through a pair of large stallions, Sugar came to a screeching stop as her head collided with a white leg, sending the small filly onto her rump in the dirt. Gazing up, the filly saw a beautiful mare wearing red sunglasses and a cap (Greek fisherman hat). The mares white coat was tattered by scar tissue running up and down her body, the sight of which caused shiver to recoil slightly.

The mare looked down with a face of worry, which transformed into a sweet smile"I'm very sorry little one, I hope you're alright."

Sugar stood up and shook some of the dust off of her coat. "I...um... I'm okay... I'm looking for Mr. Flutters."

The scarred mare looked up at the sun quizzically. "Mr. Flutters... Mr. Flutters... I'm afraid I don't know any Mr. Flutters. Unless you mean this little guy."

Sugar looked sad for a moment until a beautiful monarch butterfly fluttered around the mares hat and landed on the bill. The filly nearly bounced at the sight.

"You know, this is breed of butterfly is called the Danaus plexippus." The mare looked from side to side before leaning down and whispering. "But between us girls, I like Mr. Flutters more." Sugar giggled as the mare pulled her head back up. "Is that your mother over there? She's very pretty. Looks like someone I used to know." The mare pulled a small folded piece of parchment from her saddlebag and leaned down once more. "Tell you what, you give this to your mum from me, and I'll find a nice tree for Mr. Flutters, mmk?"

Sugar nodded with a big smile and bit down on the piece of parchment running back to her parents. Meanwhile, the mare's smile faded into a resting grim face as the filly got out of earshot. Her horn lighting up slightly with a red glow. "Sorry Mr. Flutters... perhaps another time." The butterfly began to fly from the hat, only for it's wings to crumple, sending it crashing to the dirt. Aether turned swiftly and made way towards the train station.

Sugar darted back through the crowd and up to her mother who stood there all prim and proper. Gently the filly nudged her mother's leg, holding the folded parchment in her mouth.

Renew - NPC
Appleoosa - Town Square

Renew smiled as she watched her youngest daughter chase a butterfly around the square before looking back up at the presentation, happy that Equestria was a safe enough place now that a crowd wasn't something to fear about her filly and that Equestria was safe enough that having an adopted filly wasn't a fearful thing in and of itself. Her grin widened as the tiny little mare came up to her and tugged.

"Hello there Sweetie." she said, bending down to take a look at Sugar. "What do you have here?" she asked, taking the letter, the smile melting off of her face as soon as she started reading it, instantly recognizing the hoofwriting. "Sugar Sweetie, I need you to go over to your sister or your Auntie and have them go with you to the hotel. Daddy and I have some important grown up things that we have to take care of." she said, motioning to the two mares standing a few feet away.

Renew looked up and whispered to the stallion next to her with fear in her eyes. "She's back. I don't know how, but my sister is loose"

Bronze "Blondie" Scales
Appleoosa - Fritters and Grits

Firecracker looked over towards the sounds of activity outside. "Well, I think the whole speech is over... Should be time to get to work."

The underboss downed the rest of her whisky, and relished the warm feeling for a moment, before shouting at the large pony standing on the balcony. "Oy! Shorty, get yer butt in here, and quit getting teary eyed!"

Blondie couldn't help at smile at Flare berating the eye-patched earth pony. It was good to see the two getting along, but she couldn't dwell on it long. Best to move fast, even if they were under the radar right now, it's best not to let habits dull. Of course, that didn't mean they had to rush things, it was just routine really. The mafioso turned her attention to the card players.

"Alright boys, time to wrap it up. Time to get to work." She said, clapping. The troops looked rather disappointed, and one of them even asked if they could play one more round.

"Hey, you useless pieces of...!" Firecracker barked, turning her attention towards the troops, who flinched. She cut herself on the swear, reminding her of her own personal swear jar. Bad habit she was trying to lessen, cussing tended to draw attention. "We're here for friggin' work, not to goof off! And how dare you question the don's word, I should-"

"Flare." was all Blondie had to say, before Flare shut her trap immediately, and bowed her head respectfully. She returned her attention to the card players. "...Alright, sure. One more hoof. But only on one condition."

She then pulled up a chair, and sat down herself. "Deal me in. Lowest set buys the rest drinks."

"B-Boss!" Flare blurted with disbelief. The players cheered, while one dealt the hands out enthusiastically.

"Flare, relax. It's just one round. It'll be quick and done before you know it" She said, before taking a look at her cards. Her eyes lit up, and she threw in her lot. Three pair of sixes, not a bad draw.

"Ugh, fine! But you best be including me in your round of drinks!" She said, giving up. The group cheerfully agreed to the demand, and the smaller pegasus sat down with Shorty, and gave him a pat on the back.

The hand was definitely quick, and although Blondie hadn't won, she didn't have the lowest cards. The lucky winner got a four of a kind, and the bottom of the barrel was just an ace high. So as the loser was taking orders, he passed over Flare cause they all knew she liked whisky, Blondie started giving out orders.

"Alright Trigger, I'll give you your order first since you need to go get drinks... Hey, no making faces, you know the rules! Get me another appletini." The boss said, enjoying the schadenfreude with the other winners. "Once you come back with the drinks, I want you to tag where you'd think would be where lowlifes like us would hang around. Mafia needs to stake our territory here, so let them know that we're aware of the power vacuum and we will intervene if a power struggle arises."

She tossed him a spray can, and he caught it and pocketed without even looking. All Trigger's response was a simple nod, but he was grumbling about how his streak of luck had run out.

"Right, Ace, K.O., I want you to look for thugs for recruiting, and reign them in. If they try to aggravate you, feel free to use force, but don't attempt to use coercion. However, feel free to knock out those that refuse, we don't want them to try and make a quick bit by reporting our activity in the city until we're long gone. Bring them to the original rendezvous point we were at before we entered Appleoosa." Blondie addressed a pegasus and an earthpony left after the unlucky unicorn trotted swiftly downstairs. Ace simply nodded, before checking his feathers, while K.O. grinned eagerly, popping her neck to loosen up.

Blondie then pointed at the remaining two soldiers, a Pegasus named Swift, and a Unicorn named Keen "Now, you two-"

"Kid duty?" Swift cut in rather quickly. Blondie nodded, seeing no reason to continue since the two already understood. "Alright, remember to use teleportation sparingly Keen."

"Yeah yeah, tell me twice..."

"Alright, remember to use-"

Keen smacked the smartass pegasus gently under the chin, but it was enough to get him to shut up as he accidentally nibbled on his tongue. Blondie chuckled with the other two.

"And that's all. Go out when you're ready, you can go pick up your drinks on your way down and take them with you if you want." The boss said, sitting down. They nodded, and with the sound of a handful of chairs scrapping against wood, they went off down the stairs. Not a single one wanted to sit down to enjoy their drink, Blondie could tell that the kids were eager to get their assignments done. Trigger was soon following them after after placing the glasses on the table, and giving her a small salute.

"So, our assignments then?" Flare asked, taking a sip from her whisky.

"Go to the rendezvous point, and assist Swift and Keen. Best to let them focus on their task of gathering." She replied, taking a sip from her appletini.

"Aw, babysitting duty? ...Fine fine." Flare complained with resignation. She gulped the rest of her whisky before poking Shorty rather hard. "Right, no making faces this time. You terrified the last few we got our hooves on. Got it?"

Shorty nodded glumly. Flare gave Blondie a look like she wanted to say something, before sighing. "...Don't spend too much time alright? It'd be rude to keep us waiting y'know?"

"I'll be sure to watch the time." Blondie said cheerily, finishing appletini and placing her sunglasses upon her face.

"Yeah yeah, try not to be more than fifteen minutes late this time... Come on Shorty." She said, beckoning the large stallion to follow. Firecracker saw the sad look on the stallions face, before getting annoyed. "Oy, I said no funny faces, but you can still go ahead and play friggin' paddycake, alright? Never said that was off limits, sheesh..."

Shorty's mood had brightened considerably right before they were out of view. Blondie sighed, getting up and checking if her outfit was straight. The mafioso was happy as she tossed the owner a couple more bits in tip on her way out. All she had left was to mingle with some of the folk hanging around town, and the mare had a very good feeling in her gut that she was bound to meet some interesting ponies. If this went smoothly, and the others did their assignments without a hitch, all she had to do was draw a bath when she got home, add some of her favorite bath salts, and it'd be a perfect day.

Aether

Appleoosa - Train Station

Aether lay flat on the roof of the foremost car of the train, waiting for the final whistle. Looking up at the clouds through red lenses, the mare smiled. Oh how lovely a day, no cave walls, no mutts, the look on her sister's face must have been priceless. Aether's thoughts were interrupted by the whistle of the conductor and the sudden bellowing smoke pouring from the hat from the engine. Aether stood up as the cars took to motion, the clickety-clack of the steel wheels grinding against the polished rails. Her form stood enveloped by the smoke of the engine, inching forward up to the open car where the conductor stood below.

Her horn brimmed with red magic as she gently dropped below. The conductor noticed nothing, his attention focused on keeping the engine stoked and the train steady. Aether quietly came upon the conductor, her mouth mere inches from his ear. She quickly raised her hoof, bringing it down upon the back of the stallions neck, her magic pulsing through her and slicing through his vocal chords. "Choo choo."

With quick force, Aether brought her hooves down, shattering the conductors legs. "Oh dear, that must have hurt." Aether grinned as she flipped the poor stallion on his back as he tried to crawl away. "Let's take a look now, shall we sweetie?" Aether pressed her hoof against the chest of the conductor as it pulsated with heavy breathing. The pulse of her magic passed through his body before reverberating back to Aether. "Hmmmm, my my my. Ripe... let's say 57. Ex-smoker. Gave up.... two years ago?" Aether cocked her head in a puzzled fashion before sending another pulse through his body. Throwing her head back, she smiled and continued. "Yep, two years ago. Two years..." Aether's smile turned into a frown as she looked down with a face of sympathy. "... And too late. It's started already hasn't it? Rustling away down there?"

Aether leaned her head down against the stallions stomach. "Hello Mr. Tumor..." Pressing down on the conductors stomach, sending him into an even greater struggle, Aether leaned her face inches from his. "... Goodbye daylight. Tsk tsk, I don't get a lot of pleasure out of killing an old codger who's dead already." The mare took her hooves off of the broken stallion, shaking her head with disappointment. The stallion quickly tried tried to make his way towards the door into the first car only to have Aether's hooves to press down onto his back. "But I get enough... let's give nature a hand shall we?" Aether's horn came a glow once more, spreading the cancerous tumor cells throughout the stallions lungs sending him into shock, coughing up black phlegm filled with blood. Aether pulled herself off of him, a red glow picking his cap up off the floor, and onto her head as her hat fell to the floor.

Aether turned to the engine as the conductor shriveled into a coughing mess holding his stomach, looking over all the levers and the open engine of flaring coals. "Now let's see if we can salvage this pleasant train ride. On this celebratory day, let's create some fireworks." Aether magically fueled the engine with a fresh new lump of coals, before hanging off the side of the car by a chain, sending the trains horn into full blare as the wind poured through her coat and main. A grin from ear to ear spread across her face.

Silvershine
Appleoosa – Arcana consulting, hanger

Throwing the tarp back over her current project the mare takes a moment to make sure it was properly obscured, ignoring the stampede of hooves coming in from the far side of the structure she makes sure her sword is resting close by but out of their reach. Celestia had yet to start her speech and the announcers were still talking about different aspects of the war and just how far the various races had come since then on the radio while waiting. Outside she could hear the engines of the Flankbreakers spooling down, as the door bursts open spilling forth a rainbow of colored fillies and their lone brother. Greeting her cousins with a smile she still thought it odd that their parents were cutting the visit so close. Uncle Breaker and Aunt Melody were usually very punctual to these sort of events given their status as two of the new Elements of Harmony, never mind his former E.M.P. status during the war.

Still she was the cool cousin in the family, working on all sorts of interesting projects and generally doing what she wanted, a situation that made the yearly family reunions a tiring event for her. Discarding those thoughts the mare lets her self be bowled over as the swarm reaches her as she does her best to be the cheerful awesome cousin they deserved who was a bit protective. “Offf, help I’m being swarmed by rainbow smooze!” Giggles assault her ears as the youngest of the group do their best to tickle her as she waves a free hoof in the air like a drowning pony.

It takes only a moment for Blazing Charge to swoop in grapping her hoof as the filly lifts her into the air on powerful reddish orange wings. “My hero Blaze!” she coos while beneath her the others leap to their hooves quickly chasing the pair round the hanger before Blazing’s wings give out from exhaustion. Hooves’ touching the smooth floor Silver quickly catches the tired filly across her back before looking back at the swarming horde of others. Gasping the mare looks around, “Now that my rescuer has fallen who will save me from the rainbow smooze now!

The chorus of roars sends the mare into a leisurely canter with the kids tripping over themselves to pursue. Zig zagging across the smooth floor Silver can’t help to snicker as the fillies and lone colt, Vigor, send themselves skidding past in their pursuit all across the mostly empty hanger. It almost felt bad how easy she was keeping them all off balance even while Blaze clung to her back. Leaping over Charger as the filly took briefly to the air Silver darts past the door spotting the oldest Duo Elegy speaking with her mother Gentle before the mare took to the air towards the stage after a short wave. Slowing, she barely notices when Vigor, Abyssal Gauge, Double Bass, Charger and the youngest Frost Sliver leapt onto the mare grabbing hold. Vainly the kids tried to knock her over again, though the mare’s attention was on Duo entering the hanger.

“You okay cousin,” Duo asks before Silver’s eyes fall to the pleading faces of her younger cousins trying to knock her over.

Whoops,” is all she says before collapsing on her side making sure Blaze was clear of her back. Ignoring the cheers for a moment she turns back to Duo, “Everything okay?

Duo shrugs, trotting over her horn glowing softly while plucking younger siblings from Silver’s side. “Dad’s being odd today, looks like he’s going to skip out on the big speech.” Soon as the mare spoke the radio announcers started talking about Celestia taking the stage, with all of the remaining Element’s save Loyalty on hoof along with a few well known war veterans. “Wanted us here like normal, and told mom she’d be on her own till after the speech. Something about wanting to talk to his brother about a proposal that couldn’t wait. You know how our dad can be when he’s got an idea.”

Nodding Silver slowly gets back on her hooves her ear’s twitching to listen into the speech as Celestia starts while giving Duo her attention. “ Yeah, half of them keep me way busier then I’d like to… ” trailing off she looks towards the radio for a moment longer, her mind already putting the pieces together of what was going on. Turning to Duo she moves back over to her project and the nearby work bench. “That said you mind solo duty for a few minutes Duo, I need to update dad on something.

Nodding the gold coated mare floats her saddlebags onto the bench letting it settle on Silver’s sword. “No problem, I know you’ve still got work to do.”

It was impossible to miss the deliberate action, but the mare nods, “Shouldn’t be more than a few minutes.” Not wasting time she was already opening the door on the far side of the hanger when Duo replied. Letting a sigh out when the door clicked closed she turns towards the office a short distance away trotting towards it quickly, a smile still on her muzzle. Aside from the kids, her, her dad, and Breaker no one was on site today as everypony had been given the day off like usual, giving the place an abandoned look out on the outskirts of Appleoosa, turning towards the town to the south she could see the crowd spilling out beyond into the main square and the back of the stage. Even now she could easily hear the princess words, confirming her suspicion. Slamming open the door it was lost in the torrent of stamping coming from the radio inside and crowd not too far away.

Across the offices myriad of desks and offices she could see the brothers in their shared office the door closed. Flitting past the rows of empty desks she passes her own unused office her hooves make not a sound, even though the floor was designed to make any claw or hoof sound out against its surface. Listening carefully she could hear her uncle’s voice while drawing closer. “Honestly I think we owe it to everypony.”

Through the window she could see Breaker clad in a fashionable suit standing his hooves on her father’s desk while he leaned back in his chair. “Not arguing that, still isn’t this a tad dangerous, every freak rallying to the daughters will have the perfect target at that point.”

“Kinda of the point, I know some of the others would want to speak up, but that’s a lot of hate to take on alone, especially at first.” Stamping a hoof on the desk the gold stallion seems unwilling to relent the point.

Turning his chair towards the outside window looking towards where Darkfang fell, her father stares out at the grove of cherry trees marking the place after her body was reduced to cinder by her cousin Flame Mane. That one view was the entire reason her father had wanted to locate the business in Appleoosa. “So what does Gentle say?”

Stepping into the office the mare lets her hooves finally click across the floor, “Yes what does Gentle say about putting her kids in the crosshairs?

Breaker was airborne in an instant once he heard her voice, a shield of emerald forming next to him as the mare spun around her hind legs lashing out. For a moment the shield held before buckling beneath her blow the feeling of flesh beneath her hooves lasted only a moment before the sound of splintering wood and shattering glass filled the office. Turning round she watches her uncle tumble across the arid landscape reddish dust following in his wake. Glancing at her father Silver shakes her head. “Does he ever think about these ideas before jumping on them?

Shrugging her father keeps his gaze on the trees a short distance away. “He wants to help, sometimes he leaps without thinking. Least he turned down heading the PSA.”

Bucking right he did, that kind of attention on my cousins is not something I’m going to put up with. Not after…

“I know, I know.” For a moment neither says anything as her uncle coughs a few times. “I’ll see if I can get in touch with Longshot, I assume you’ll have no problem if the two of us step forward.”

Nodding the filly starts towards the new Breaker exit she’d recently made. “Any being dumb enough to come after you or your family deserves what they get.

“I know honey, and.”

Cutting off the stallion she pauses at the hole her eyes shifting back to her father. His face contorted by guilt and pain over what she’d gone through. “I know dad, I know. I don’t blame you, you know that.

The look remained even as he nodded, “I know, but I was going to say watch it, the PSA and guard are all over the place and you just punted the Element of Loyalty through a wall.”

Smiling the mare turns back towards her uncle. “Well it’s not like I built half their gear or anything.

Frost Glider - Appleoosa - Town Square

Frost stood, her family nearby. Like everyone else assembled, she was bore formal attire in the way of a finely made dress, while not as elegant as the rest of her family's get ups, through request of her own, she still hoped to catch someone's eye.

Not entirely bothering to listen to the speech, Frost's mind began to wander primarily on how long this entire thing would last. She hadn't been born while the war was going on, only hearing about it from her father and some family friends and later reading and studying it at school, but some of that felt more like propaganda rather than actual facts. Looking around she tried to see if anyone else was having just as hard time focusing on the speech and when the actual party would start. At least then she could get out of the dress. Scanning, Frost's eyes fell on her sister next to her, who seemed to be focused on the Princess. A sly grin crept on the pegasi's face as she focused on the area around her. Her mind fixating on the aura which permeated from her. The weather team had already made sure that clear skies were a given and in the near barren desert around Appleoosa wouldn't do anyone any favors when it came to heat. But maybe Prism wouldn't mind just a few more degrees, get her a bit hot under the collar.

Bronze "Blondie" Scales
Appleoosa - Town Square

Of course, she had to imagine the bath getting home. That usually triggered something bad happening, and sure enough she got a tap on the shoulder.

Turning around, she found herself looking straight in the eyes of a familiar face, and frowning because that didn't mean good news.

"...Lab? Fancy meeting you here, how're you?" The mob boss asked pretty normally, but her demeanor was grim. The crowd was busy celebrating, loud and happy, nobody would even be aware for almost a full minute even if a murder took place.

"Heya Boss, doing alright. You seen my goggles anywhere?" The somewhat frazzled looking pegasus said, without realizing they were sitting on his forehead. Blondie simply tapped her hat, and he muttered a quick and embarrassed thank you.

Blondie was quizzical at the appearance of another one of Flare's capos being in the city. "...I don't remember giving the order for the Rodents to move out. Why're you in Appleoosa?"

"No no, you didn't give out any order." Lab Rat said quickly. "But this is how we operate, we need to set up a a... rat to handle information within the city. Appleoosa never had any sort of interest due to being a small frontier town, but now that it's gotten busy, it's about time. Took three others with me, Rat, Mouse, and Mole."

"Sounds fair." The boss nodded understandingly. The Rodents, the group in her syndicate that handled information, was very meticulous and quiet. They always seemed to have what she needed, and she gave them pretty much free reign so long as they did so... And if they behaved of course. "...But the fact you're talking to me must mean something."

"...Yeah, sorry boss. Let me give it to you quick." He said, rummaging into his little lab coat. Lab Rat then brought out a somewhat crumpled piece of paper, with a fairly detailed sketch of a unicorn mare wearing a hat and glasses. It was in black in white, but underneath was written the name "Aether", scribbled quickly.

"What am I looking at here?" She said, not making heads or tails of the picture. It must have been a picture drawn by Mole, so she had to be important, but Blondie didn't recognize the mare.

"Unicorn's name's Aether, as you can see. Incarcerated in Tartarus for committing wanton slaughter of various ponies decades ago. Most of the families took note, and basically blacklisted her, and decided to "Avoid her like a plague of parasites", and made absolute sure to keep the picture. Mole spotted her from one of the rooftops in the crowd, then again from the top of a train car, and disappearing inside it. We can assume she has hijacked it." Lab said grimly, handing over the drawing. "To make it short, she's a highly dangerous psychopath that just hijacked a train."

Blondie looked it over, before rolling her eyes and sighing. "High security prison my hoof. I should be thanking Celestia for how poor her criminal policies are, because boy does it make our job easier."

Lab nodded in agreement as Blondie returned the sketch. "Right, go contact the other three, and have them contact the groups I dispatched. I brought-"

"Trigger, Ace, K.O., Keen, and Swift. Groups of 3, perfect." The pegasus interrupted, already knowing the 5.

"...It's almost creepy how well you do your job." The mafioso said, shaking her head. "But yeah, contact them, and tell them to finish up with whatever I assigned them for, and pull out fast. Meet at the rendezvous and such. Pull out the Rodents as well, and head back ahead of us and post a personal bounty on this loony for however much you think is appropriate. Make it so she's got three tons of lead in her if she takes a single step into our territory. But prevent any active hunts, I don't want anyone to just kill themselves for a couple of bits."

"Gotcha Boss. Are you planning on socializing still?" The Rodent Capo asked curiously.

Blondie shook her head, not happy anymore. "This ruined my mood. And you have to be an idiot to stick around if someone that dangerous did something that obviously stupid within three miles where you stand. Going home and taking that stupid bubble bath..."

"Sure thing Boss. Oh, one thing." He said, turning to leave. "Rodents are meant to be creepy."

Then he was gone from sight. Blondie groaned, rolling her eyes, before she went on her way to leave the city. Lab Rat's unnecessary dramatics were still something she could never get used to.

[Squad 2]
Ace & Kaya - NPC
Appleoosa - Outside some offices

"Grrrr, where in the heck are all the scum?" K.O. complained as she skulked behind a building with Ace. "Is the presence of goodies putting all of them in hiding?"

"Kaya, we aren't here to beat some poor sack up. Just recruitment, and keep your voice down, it sounds like there are ponies in some of these buildings." Ace hissed.

And then out of nowhere, there was a loud crash and the two of them were immediately on edge, K.O. looking around while Ace was scanning the area with pistol drawn. Then, tumbling a long, a poor beat up looking golden unicorn bounced, and skidded to a stop right in front of the two.

There was a moment of silence, before K.O. piped up with a whistle, and commented with "I want one of whatever the pony that punched this guy had."

"Shush. Come on Kaya, let's go. We're not going to- ...Hm? Is that Mouse? What in blazes is he doing here?" Ace said, spotting a familiar earth pony. He trotted over, and they exchanged short pleasantries before exchanging information.

However, K.O. noticed something around the stallion's neck that looked like jewelry. It looked really expensive, what with its shine and the gigantic rock sat in the middle. Since the Las Pegasus branch of the mafia had done their best to have no involvement in the war, it wasn't common knowledge among them what the new element bearers looked like, or even what the elements looked like. And if poor K.O. had known better, she would've left it on the beat up bumpkin, and told Ace and Mouse to have hurried up and out of there. But instead, with a small tug, it was soon in her hooves, and in a burlap sack that most of the mafia had with them to help carry various things.

"Hey! Kaya, what are you doing?" Ace called over, beckoning the mare to hurry up.

"This idiot had some shiny trinket on him!" K.O. said cheerfully, waving the bag as she joined the other two.

"Huh. Well at least we won't be retreating completely empty hooved. Mouse, you mind being bagstallion? Drag the loot with you when you head back with the rest of the loot?" The pegasus asked.

Mouse nodded, and took the bag from K.O., before galloping off. Ace shook his head, and sighed in annoyance. "Right, we need to go Kaya. Something about a psycho hijacking a train, boss's orders. Let's hightail it outta here."

And then they took off towards the edge of the city.

Kroll

Appleoosa - Train Station

Kroll grunted as the train pulled into the station, staggering slightly as the locomotive lurched to a halt next to the platform. The tercel let out a groan that was stifled by his helmet's metal faceshield as he scanned out past the station's entrance and out into what little of the town he could see from his spot on the caboose's balcony. If he had known that this was the place he was going to be stranded in, Kroll wouldn't have had his contract terminate at "the next major stop", but he figured that this is what he deserved for not paying closer attention to the train's route before signing on.

Holstering his rifle and slinging his rucksack over one shoulder, the griffon hopped off the caboose's small stairway and began to walk with purpose towards the frontmost car of the train, ignoring any of the odd looks the dismounting passengers might've given him has he strode past--and in some cases pushed through--them. On any other given day he would've at least had put in the effort to be courteous and navigate around the passengers that got in his way or at the very least apologize, but the only thing on Kroll's mind at the moment was collecting his pay and leaving, preferably to sequester himself somewhere in this town that offered shade. And cheap food.

As he continued to make his way towards the train's control car, a part of the mercenary was beginning to wish that he didn't agree to take a 24-hour watch shift, as the fatigue from being awake for so long was most definitely starting to take its toll on him. Still, he knew he could use the extra pay, and he could always make up for lost sleep later. After what seemed like an eternity, Kroll finally arrived to the frontmost car of the train, using a heavy fist to bang twice on the metal side of the car to announce his arrival to the conductor. After a few moments the conductor peered at the armored griffon from over the cab's rail, scoffing slightly at the impatiently outstretched claw he was almost immediately met with. The stallion disappeared for minute before returning with a small pouch of bits, which dismissively tossed to Kroll before returning his attention to the train car's controls.

The griffon stared down at the meager sum he now held in his claw with a look of disbelief. This was they considered a suitable level of pay for the services he provided?! If he had the energy or will to do so, the tercel would have given the conductor a piece of his mind over this injustice, but at this point it didn't seem worth the effort anymore. Turning about on his heel, Kroll made his way out of the train station, hefting the pouch in his claw as he weighed his options. With what it felt like, the griffon surmised that at best that he could spend a night at the finest room the worst inn this town had to offer and have some left over for a meal or two. Not too bad, but he had been paid more to do less in the past.

Taking note of how crowded the town square seemed to be, the mercenary elected to hang back towards the outskirts of the town away from the all the commotion, finding a nice shady spot behind a building to rest his legs for a little while while he made up his mind on where to go to spend his earnings.

Silvershine
Appleoosa – Arcana consulting, hanger

She couldn’t believe what she was seeing, some random pony in the shadows had just tugged something off her uncle while they watched. Who in their right mind would steal from Balthier Breaker, the element of Loyalty? If they were willing to answer the pony disappeared behind a building before Silver could ask. “Dad!

“On it,” the old stallion’s horn flared to life her uncle snapping back towards the broken wall while she rushed after.

Rushing past her groaning uncle she offers a quick sorry before bolting past him towards the storage buildings on the edge of the lot. Sliding to a stop her sword slams into the ground a short distance ahead, her father’s black aura shedding from it quickly. Ignoring the blade her eyes scan the ground for hoof marks, before scooping the sword up in one smooth motion before placing it back to its proper place on her back. Following the trail she winds through the storage buildings before bolting into the open. A pair of ponies had a bit of a head start on her already on their way to the town outskirts. “Oh no, it’s not going to be that easy to steal from my family.” she grumbles before breaking into a full gallop. Any concern about them seeing or hearing her chasing them was left in the shade beneath the buildings behind her.

Prism- Appleoosa - Town Square

Prism was secretly about as bored as her sister, but she had more experience in acting and kept up her respectful appearance even though she knew that both of her parents went about recounting Equestrian history in a much more interesting manner than he Princesses. Not that the alicorn minded the royal members of her race, she just was used to less pomp and more theatrics.

Her concentration on acting respectful was disrupted when the gorgeous afternoon suddenly started warming up, and not just a lack of breeze warming, it was like the hoofterlands had suddenly turned into a desert. Prism was confused for a moment, the sudden change was totally unexpected...but her confusion was quickly dispelled when she remembered that her sister was likely just as bored as she was, if not moreso. Prism looked over and noticed her sister's face, she shot her back daggers with her eyes and rolled them before slightly swinging her tail in an attempt to cool down.

Ace & Kaya
Appleoosa - Backstreets

"...Hey Ace?"

"What?"

"Erm, we have someone on our tail."

The two criminals slow downed a bit, and looked back. And sure enough, a mare was galloping at high speed towards the two of them. And she had a look that clearly said she wasn't out for a run.

Ace sighed, and stopped to prepare for impact. He didn't draw either of his weapons, their plans didn't call for a corpse or attention within fifty blocks. "Well, looks like somepony did notice you stealing from that guy. Great job Kaya"

"Hey it's fine, it's fine. It's just a lone mare, we can take her." K.O. said confidently, popping her neck. "We've dealt with much worse odds, with us being on the receiving end."

But as she drew closer, something felt off about her. They couldn't place it until Ace was finally able to spot what was on her back.

"...Is that a sword?" He said hesitantly, looking at K.O.

"... Either that, or a really large letter opener." K.O. replied, now looking a lot less sure.

"...Yep, that's a damned sword." Ace said, drawing his knife and taking flight. "Kaya, we're running!"

K.O. nodded, and they were off as fast as they could. However, she couldn't help but add "You sure you don't wanna see who's got the sharper weapon?"

"Haha, very funny. Slow her down already!" Ace shouted, cutting a few clotheslines down as he flew on through. K.O. replied in kind by kicking a couple trash cans in the direction of her pursuer, as well as knocking down as many things as she could as she passed by. The noise was loud, which the two of them didn't like, but they had no choice. Ace was just glad it wasn't as conspicuous as a gunshot though.

Silvershine
Appleoosa – Back streets

They’d taken a few turns and twists once they’d gotten closer to the town’s main buildings now the pair was just knocking over anything. “Guess we’ll add littering to the list,” she mutters while hopping the first bit of clutter. It was almost funny how the pair were slowing themselves up, then again they likely thought she’d run through the rest of it. Angling her run the mare gallops at a wall jumping her for hoof dragging along the wall as her rear hooves race across the surface before she pushes off to the otherside of the alley landing on a low ledge. Bounding off that she reaches the building’s roof with a grin. For a moment she thought about shouting something at the pair, but caution kept her muzzle shut, her hooves racing across the rooftops to catch up between jumps between buildings.

[Squad 2]
Ace & Kaya
Appleoosa - Backstreets

It didn't need to be communicated between the two what they were thinking, it was as if they had telepathy. 'How is she so freakishly agile?' If they weren't trying to escape, they may have been amazed and try to recruit the mare into their organization if it didn't seem to be the law abiding type. Even being part of the Veterans, movement like that seemed impossible for somepony stuck on the ground.

"We aren't gonna get away from this mare I think Kaya." Ace growled, returning to the ground after seeing the swordsmare dodge every obstacle they made. Any other lawkeeper would've tripped for sure, but this one didn't seem ordinary.

"...We need to resort to Scapegoat?" K.O. grimaced.

The pegasus looked grim, and sighed as he sheathed his knife. They were approaching the main square now. "The boss is going to be real pissed. Such a simple job, and we screw it up trying to make up for failure."

K.O. was silent, as she knew it was her fault. But it was obvious Ace was shouldering the blame for the two of the.

"Right, Safehouse C2." Ace said, drawing his gun. "After I come back, you owe me a drink and a round on the bed."

K.O. snorted, and nodded. "Sounds fair, but you better not get caught. Don't wanna tick the boss off more with needing to retrieve you. You know how she hates cashing favors for screw ups."

The pegasus grunted in affirmation. However the two knew he was going to get away, Ace had experience. There were stickier situations he had gotten out of. Then, the mafioso picked up speed right into the air zone above the square.

"Good day Appleoosa!" He shouted to everypony there, making it obvious his gun was drawn. "The Discordant sends their regards and their congratulations on your rebuild! Try not to screw it up like Fillydelphia, and make sure to spay and neuter your stupid pets, and thank the Princesses for your celebration you selfish bastards!"

Then he took two shots into the air, piercing a rather large cloud. Then before anyone could react, he was speeding off towards the east towards Cloudsdale, making sure to clip the cloud with one of his wings as he left. Two jets of rainwater sprayed out into the crowd, and several suited guards made haste in chasing Ace, but he was already out of the city limits.

While the authorities were on Ace, and panic was ensuing, all K.O. had to deal with was the rampaging crowd, and the mare on her tail. She stopped real quick, and turned to make an obscene gesture towards the mare on the roof, before darting through the crowd unnoticed, eastward towards the train station.

Silvershine
Appleoosa – Rooftops

She was mid jump when the stallion opened fire, rolling across the roof the mares hung agape before she scrambles to her hooves. She had in fact found the dumbest crooks in Equestria. Barely sparing the pegasus a glance, she notes the guard’s rising to chase. Ahead of her the alley gives way to the town square and the festival beyond, the mare moving through it amid the now swarming chaos pausing only long enough at the end of the alley to give an obscene gesture.

In the distance near her families company a loud klaxon rang out once, beneath it the mare could barely make out the whine of engines priming in a forced ignition sequence. From her harness a squawk of radio static kicks on, her mind already starting to time the limited two minute battery life for the micro radio. “Silver, you okay?” Her dad tried to sound calm but the concern was palpable in his voice.

Galloping along the roof tops she saw glimpses of the mare seemingly heading east towards the train station. “Unhurt. Two targets, pegasus stallion flew east after firing twice into a cloud and clipping another. Second is somewhere in the crowd now, unicorn or earth pony mare, unsure. Looks to be inbound to the train station.” Sticking to the roofs she was glad to see Celestia shouting for calm, a few Star Wardens and other Guards standing nearby partial shields at the ready, but not obscuring the princess or the others. Though here and there unicorns held bubbles of energy around their families and friends to protect them from both the crowd and whoever had fired the shots.

Roaring like a manticore the Shrieking Daffodil pounces into the air, its movements belaying her uncle’s irritation at the events. She barely remembered her time aboard with Star during the war, but her father had taken possession of it afterward and more than a few ponies fed her a rather heavy stream of revenue to keep the ship at whatever the current bleeding edge of airship tech was. Already locals were pausing pointing at the ship and what it could mean, even the Princess of the Sun paused in her calming effort to look at the ship and the ponies she knew would be aboard. “Roger that, moving to assist.” There was a pause before he continued, the mare jumping between buildings. “They took the necklace.”

Hitting the landing hard the mare slides to a stop, ripping her eyes from the sea of ponies below she focuses on the airship and the half dozen pegasus from her crew rising from the crowd most pointing to the Arcana compound as they took to the air. “Repeat?!” She had less than thirty seconds of power left, but she hoped she’d misheard her father.

“Repeat, Element is gone.” As the words reach her the radio chimes once before the static fades the power spent. Like a hawk the small airship perches like a hawk on hire seeking its prey her crew already moving get her weapons in a semi ready status. Then she spots her father drop from the ship’s deck onto the roof of the train station before jumping down, he was old, but he still kept himself fit. Still her breath caught when she saw he was wearing his armor as he stood at the top of the stairs leading into the station.

Gritting teeth the mare starts kicks off the roof the shingles cracking beneath her hooves. Racing along the outside of the she spots a gryphon resting in an alley the look of merc. Angling to the side she leaps down into the alley shouting at him at a full gallop her tail shifting into her saddle bags, “HEY MERC! Six hundred bits for a capture job, half now, half at jobs end!” From her saddlebag her tail resurfaces a bag of bits held at its end. If the merc was interested he only had to reach out and grab it. Either way she wanted some backup, and she didn’t care who it came from for once.

Kroll
Appleoosa – Alleyway

What Kroll had originally intended to be a quick rest had instead turned into a lengthy power nap, one that was cut abruptly by the deafening wail of the klaxon sounding off from somewhere close by. Now jolted awake by the growing commotion, the tercel to grabbed his rifle and scrambled to his feet, keeping his weapon in an alert carry as he quickly glanced about his immediate area for any signs of danger. In the distance he could hear sounds of the crowd's tumult. Over what specifically was uncertain to mercenary, though if it warranted the sounding of alarm, then it must have been something rather dire, and therefore something he should stay away from.

Kroll had started to relax slightly when he heard a voice shout out from behind him. "HEY MERC!" The griffon turned about sharply to see an earth pony charging at him from further down the alleyway. He was midway through raising his rifle at the stranger when he heard her continue. "Six hundred bits for a capture job, half now, half at job's end!" He then saw the mare pull out a pouch from her saddle bag as she continued to draw closer, cementing the tercel's interest in her offer. If he had a bit more time to mull it over, Kroll would've certainly taken the time do so, but this was a split-second decision; if he took any more time to think about whether to take the job or not, it could've quite literally passed him by before he made up his mind. A capture job no doubt sounded like a good challenge, and for such a generous price he'd have to have be a fool to decline.

In a swift sequence of movements, the tercel snatched the bag from the mare's tail before pivoting on his heel to begin chasing after her, taking a few seconds to catch up with his new employer. "So! New-boss!" he shouted to Silvershine in a somewhat-forced cheerful tone that reverberated through the metal faceshield of his helmet. "Who are we to capture?"
