Race: Unicorn

Name: Valence Bond

Gender: female

Appearance: Valence has a creamy white coat, which tends to gleam. Her eyes are a deep royal purple, though she needs glasses to see clearly (and in her line of work, seeing clearly is absolutely mandatory). Her mane is a bright pink, with a slightly darker pink tone running through it in streaks. she usually wears it up, so as to be out of her face as she is working in the lab.

Faction: Peacekeepers

Personality: Valence is, for lack of a better term, eccentric. she is definitely intelligent, but she doesn't really understand how to interact with other ponies- not that it stops her from trying. She likes other ponies, but she just doesn't really get how to talk to them. She tends to be quiet and reserved most of the time, though when she gets talking about something she actually knows about, she won't shut up.

The onset of hostilities has motivated her employers, Banei and Banker Research & Development, to look into weapons and armor development. Valence has personally worked on several prototype weapons projects, and has been hard at work designing a wearable armor mesh for pegasi, one that is more resistant to the weaponry used by the Alliance. She also has a few side projects as well, usually when somepony outside the firm is willing to fund her research directly. Her biggest customer for these sorts of arrangements is Steel Stride, whom she thinks is an acquisitions agent for the Peacekeepers.

Special Talent: Valence is an extremely gifted chemist, and her magic is particularly useful in this regard. Specifically, she can magically alter the number of electrons of an object, provided the object isn't (A) a radioactive isotope or noble gas; and (B) Isn't alive, since living things are constantly changing chemically in very small ways. In effect, she can only affect the valence electrons of naturally-occurring elements, which can readily react, are not subject to radioactive decay, or currently in the process of chemically changing. Further, her magic can only affect fairly small samples (usually around half a kilogram or so- less so for heavier elements, more so for lighter ones). This magical ability serves to give her the capability of creating a wide variety of compounds and useful materials by forcing materials to chemically bond without the need for complex processes and highly specialized equipment, though only in small amounts- and the more drastic the alteration, the more time it takes and the more physically exhausting the process is.

Bio: Valence has always been a highly curious pony, and from the time she was a foal, she has tried to understand how things work. Mechanical things, however, tend to irreparably break when she gets her hooves on them, and social graces have always seemed insurmountably complicated to her. However, in science, she found something she could take apart AND put back together, and she dove wholeheartedly into the study of chemistry and biology. One fateful day, her class was dissecting frogs, and Valence found that she lacked the heart to go through with it, even though the frogs were already dead. Biology, she determined, was something she could not continue studying, as the implications of making a mistake were more than she felt she could live with. chemistry became her passion- but, as usual, her tendency to accidentally break things led, more than once, to her accidentally destroying some pricey piece of equipment. Her parents tried their best to be supportive, but it's difficult when your daughter ruins a twenty-thousand-bit mass spectrometer. Devastated, Valence decided to just study textbooks, and leave the experimentation to others- but it seemed unfair that she needed big, expensive machines, beakers, burners, and lots of other things just to rearrange electrons.

As she was levitating a glass of water to have a drink, the reflection of a light bulb shone through the glass. Valence marveled that water could extinguish flames, but its components were highly flammable- and if she could just run a current through it, the water would be flammable (and oddly, once ignited, would revert to water vapor). She was so busy pondering how to change the chemical bond between the hydrogen and oxygen in the water, that her magic- unbeknownst to her- did just that, causing the glass to pop in a bluish flash... and her cutie mark to appear. It was an atomic nucleus, with eight tiny electrons orbiting it- an Oxygen atom.

Valence continued to study chemistry, earning a Bachelor's from Atlainta State, and a Masters from Mane U, with a few correspondence courses from Canterlot U as well. She began working for Abtenauer Medical, a pharmaceutical company, right after getting her Masters. Her first big success came with an antidepressant medication, selenium anorthoclase laureth tablets. She nicknamed the project "SALT", and forwarded it on to the Biology department for animal trials. It proved to be wildly effective, and was railroaded through the approvals process and out on the market in less than a year.

It was one of the most effective treatments for a variety of psychiatric conditions- but there were unintended side effects. Ponies could achieve a euphoric state by grinding the tablets into a powder, mixing it with common table salt, and licking or otherwise ingesting it. The effect was extremely potent, but short-lasting. Ponies who resorted to abusing it that way quickly became addicts.

Valence only found out much later that her original design for the medication had been rushed through testing when she heard about the wave of "sALt" addictions on the news. She was both devastated and furious, and immediately resigned her position at Abtenauer- good thing too, as a wave of lawsuits pushed the company to bankruptcy. Valence started working with Banei & Banker soon after, and although she has often been offered a promotion, she prefers to keep working in the lab. She has been with Banei & Banker for about three years, and was in the midst of working on a military weapons contract when she met somepony rather... unusual. One Detective Noir, a stallion with a prosthetic leg, an incredibly dextrous tail, and a fascinating firearm, who happened to be from an entirely different dimension.

Determined to help her new friend in any way she can, Val formulates a plan to get the pair of them into the Grand Galloping Gala in Canterlot. She takes an extended vacation from the research lab, packs all of her finest clothes, and sets out aboard a pirate's airship to see this plan through to the end, even if it means her heart will break at its conclusion.

Despite her best efforts, the plan for the Gala was a total failure. With no funding for the portal machine nor equipment or lab space in which to build it, Valence has been forced to shelve it, for the moment. However, her talk of the portal machine piqued the interest of one Twilight Sparkle, who hoof-picked Val to take part in a major undertaking for the war effort. Val gladly joined up, both to help win the war and to earn funds, and access to lab space and equipment, for the portal device.

Val in all her finery, ready for the Gala!

Connections to Others
Spoiler:
This is purely how Val views others and might not match with another character's views.

Family: Her mother and father still live in Atlainta- her father, Star Driver, works as a locomotive repairpony, though he is about four years away from retiring. Her mother, Star Lily, works as a florist in her spare time, as she had retired early from a teaching post at Sillyfilly elementary. She has no siblings. Recently, she encountered a Diamond Dog pup named Onyx, whom she sees as a son and who sees her as his mother. Unbeknownst to her, after a romantic interlude with Noir two months ago she became pregnant- she has attributed symptoms of the pregnancy with stress for the time being.

Love Interest: Ever since meeting Detective Noir outside her laboratory, Valence has been smitten. After much introspection, Valence has determined that she is, in fact, in love with Noir- and though she would never admit it, this has colored her capacity for objectivity. She'd do anything to help him, and has put a great deal of effort into reconstructing a portal machine that can send him home.

Friends: She considers Dr. Honey Heart to be her best friend, and sees Gentle Melody as a close friend, too. She also recently attempted to bury the hatchet with Smoking Gun, and she considers Dr. Gem Shard to be her magical mentor.

Allies: Captain Keelhaul, for all his failings, is somepony Val has come to trust. Detective Noir and Smoking Gun are about the closest she has been to anypony aside from her parents, and Dr. Gem Shard is like a second father to her. Finally, Steel Stride has proven himself to be a good pony to know in the past, and though their relationship is strictly professional, Val considers him a trustworthy pony.

Enemies: Valence doesn't have anypony she really sees as an enemy.

Potential Enemies: The Alliance's encroachments into Equestrian territory has everypony on edge, including Val.

Race: Earth Pony

Name: Steel Stride

Gender: male

Appearance: Steel Stride has a gunmetal grey coat with pale blue speckles covering his haunches. His left rear leg is covered in heavy scarring, which is covered in discolored white fur. He also has a prominent scar down his chest. He stands about fourteen hands high at the shoulder, and is fairly well muscled, though not exceptionally so. His eyes are a piercing, steely blue, and his mane is a bluish grey color, reminiscent of newly forged metal. Unlike many ponies, he wears horseshoes on all four hooves, which are plated in chrome to prevent corrosion- and as a bonus, give him a distinctive sounding stride and a brilliant metal gleam. These shoes serve as corrective devices, similar to human orthotics. Steel's cutie mark is a pair of crossed wrenches, with an inverted horseshoe above them, similar to a Jolly Roger.

Steel Stride, on a casual day about town
Image

Faction: Neutral, leaning towards Peacekeepers

Personality: Steel Stride has always had a problem with authority, and prefers to follow his own honor code to having edicts issued from on high by who he sees as useless bureaucrats and nosy busybodies. The fact that he has more than once been stabled for smuggling has, not surprisingly, reinforced this attitude.

Steel Stride sees his smuggling as fulfilling a demand by his consumers, and not as violating laws. The resurgence of dragons has dramatically increased the need for his services, as the official distribution channels of the Equestrian royalty are hesitant to travel through outlying territories. This leaves the populations of frontier towns, such as Appleloosa, in dire need of supply, and Steel Stride is happy to provide it. For a price, of course.

Since he does not take sides, Steel Stride is more than happy to funnel supplies to anyone willing to pay. He is not entirely disloyal to the crown, however, as he does not sell information to the Dragons or their allies, and his network of contacts, rogues, and vagabonds are an effective spy network for the royals.

Special Talent: Steel Stride's special talent is, in his own words, "diplomacy". In reality, it is more akin to piracy- he knows how to get just about anything to just about anypony, despite being unable to sneak around and unwilling to use force. He has a talent for picking up subtleties in conversation- minor details that other ponies might overlook- and these seeming trivialities he can use to his advantage later.

Bio: Steel Stride grew up in Fillydelphia. Steel Stride was always something of a troublemaker as a colt, which caused his parents a lot of grief. He gained his cutie mark right around the same time he was stabled for the first time- though it wouldn't be the last. Over the next few years, Steel Stride was stabled four more times, until in desperation, his parents left Fillydelphia in order to escape from the stigma their son had caused. Steel decided to leave town too, but rather than head into more civilized parts, he headed out to Appleloosa.

Unfortunately, his train was targeted by buffalo as it approached Appleloosa, and the locomotive was derailed by their assault. Several ponies, including Steel, were seriously injured. The powered locomotive lines were severely damaged, forcing the railroad to use horse-drawn cars, running along antiquated rails. Steel's left rear leg was shattered from the hip down, and required an operation to repair. The doctors installed metal rods for new bone growth to anchor to, and gave him corrective horseshoes to compensate for his slightly shortened leg. The medical bills of his surgery, orthotics, and physical therapy were immense- but Steel Stride had a knack for certain unsavory business dealings, which the isolated and besieged town of Appleloosa was in dire need of.

Two years after the accident, Steel Stride had not only paid off all his medical bills, but carved a niche for himself in the legal purgatory of Appleloosa. He had seen the twon as the closest thing to a 'home' he really had, and it's loss weighs more heavily on him than he would ever admit to.

Steel's Airship- the MMS Black Mako:
Steel Stride is one of the few earth ponies to own an airship- which he calls The Black Mako as a joke, given that its hull is plated with white ceramic veneers. this serves as his home and main mode of transport, as ever since the train wreck that injured him, Steel Stride avoids trains and carriages, alike. He acquired the Mako through questionable means, during a business arrangement in Canterlot. While checking on an associate of his, Steel overheard rumors of a major Pegasus derby coming to Canterlot. seeing this as a chance to call in a debt as well as ingratiate himself to the upper crust, Steel volunteered himself in the setup crew for the grounds, a position he offered to do without pay. This gave him ample opportunity to study the competitors as they ran through practice circuits and the like.

Phase One was complete- Phase Two required him to cozy up to Canterlot's Nuveau Riche. Once he started discussing the various pegasi competing at the derby, however, cozying up to the wealthy- but not necessarily clever- ponies was a cakewalk. A few subtle suggestions, a couple friendly wagers, and the stage was set. A spoiled colt named Gold Dust, heir to the Gold family fortune, had made a 20,000 bit wager that Rail Lighter, a derby veteran, would take the crown. Steel bet that Rail Lighter would win the race, but lose the crown, to the tune of 150,000 bits. The die was cast.

Once the bet was made, Steel's plan went into Phase Three- ensure that Rail Lighter would win. That was simple enough- all Steel had to do was pour sleeping potion into the water supply. It would be dilute enough to be next to impossible to trace, but still slow down the pegasi enough to give Rail Lighter an edge. And since Steel was still working on the grounds, he had ample opportunity to spike the other competitors, as well as give Rail an "energy boosting" vitamin that was, in reality, just an antidote to the sleeping potion.

The race was predictable- all the other competitors besides Rail Lighter seemed more sluggish than usual, while Rail himself won handily. the judges were not exactly convinced, and decreed that the awarding of the crown would wait until all the competitors had undergone a physical examination. Of course, since Steel had sent an anonymous letter to the judging panel the night before, that was hardly surprising- to him, at any rate. The crowd was chomping at the bit in a fury.

The scandal only grew more intense in the coming days, as the investigation revealed that all the pegasi- save one- had been dosed with a sleeping potion. It had been almost impossible to test for, and even the finest doctors in Canterlot would have missed it, were it not for an anonymous letter informing the medical board of the exact potion used. After that detail was made public, some of the elite ponies who had made wagers with Steel Stride came forward, admitting that they heard Gold Dust make a large wager with a pony whose name they could not remember. Gold Dust found himself in the center of a whirlwind of controversy, as well as a massive debt. Into this mess stepped an unlikely savior- Steel Stride.

Steel explained how the building materials used had leeched chemicals into the water, which mimicked the effects of a sleeping potion. He went into great detail describing the herbal supplement he had tried convincing the pegasi to take to counteract it, which only Rail Lighter had taken. He admitted to making a wager with Gold Dust, but explained how it had always been a Gentlecolt's Wager, and thus no money was exchanged.

Naturally, the press did not believe his story- but the evidence seemed to support him. So, without any real crime to pin to him, Gold Dust managed to avoid arrest, imprisonment, and losing his fortune. But this came at a cost- Steel Stride had cleared him, and wanted something in return. A ship. Not just any ship, either- a custom built, luxury airship. At first, Gold refused- but Steel reminded him that their original wager wasn't sealed with a hoofshake- they had written it down, and though Gold had undoubtedly destroyed his copy, Steel had not. And should the press, or the police, ever get wind of it, the consequences would be disastrous. An older, wiser pony may have been able to get out of such blackmail, but Gold Dust was not a wise pony, and relented.

Steel named his new ship The Black Mako, which he found amusing given that the ship's entire hull was plated in white ceramic (to cut down on wind resistance, as well as make its outline difficult to spot amidst cloud cover). The Mako is large enough to require at least three ponies to operate correctly, though it can function passably with just two. It has extensive belowdecks accommodations- five first class double sized cabins, and twelve single occupant cabins. combined with the generously sized Captain's cabin located on the deck itself (the captain's cabin is built into the wheelhouse) this gives the Mako enough space, when fully occupied, for 35 to 55 ponies.

After landing in Ponyville and meeting Dr. Honey Heart, Steel has refit the Mako into a mobile hospital vessel- turning two of the first class cabins into medical theaters- specifically, one operating room and one emergency room. The ship has also been fitted with additional generators for electricity- both fuel operated and wind turbine operated- as well as a high capacity water heating system and an in-ship laundry room (built into a third first-class cabin). The remaining two first-class cabins have been refit as patient quarters, each holding six pony-sized beds comfortably, or ten if packed in tightly. Cabins in the crew quarters section of the ship that are unoccupied can also be used for patient quarters, and one of the standard crew cabins has been retrofit into a pharmacy, which contains all the ship's medicines and drugs with the exception of those requiring refrigeration.

The ballast section of the ship- the lowest deck- has been converted into storage. the fore section, which received the most wind shear as the ship is flying and thus requires the least effort to cool, has been refit as a cold storage/refrigeration unit (which also has a small, locked compartment for refrigerated medicines), while the rest of the ballast deck is used for dry goods. The water tanks are located here, in the aft compartment, as is the chemical toilet storage tank, which is separated from the clean water supply by a large watertight partition. There are also the sterilization tanks on this level, which first use a chemical bath to dissolve organic matter on the implements being sterilized, followed by an ultra-high-temperature steam bath to destroy any microorganisms, and a cold water bath to re-temper the metal instruments.

The Mako features an advanced Teletype transmitter for communications outside the ship, and a series of copper tubes that run from the wheelhouse to every room on the ship, with a larger, ship-wide call tube for announcements and the like. These call tubes are more primitive than the teletype, and rely on metallic resonance to amplify sounds transmitted through them.

Race: Zebra

Name: Mauti Damu

Gender: female

Appearance: Mauti has a very lithe, streamlined physique for a zebra, giving her an exotic and eye-catching aesthetic beauty. Her striping, like most of her kin, has roughly the same proportion of black to white, and run mostly vertically across her body, except for her muzzle, which has a pair of horizontal stripes below her eyes and another single horizontal stripe above them, making her eyes stand out considerably. Unlike most zebras, her eyes are a deep, almost blood red, a less than subtle suggestion as to the nature of her Zebrican magic. In essence, Mauti is absolutely gorgeous for an equine, though her eyes are unsettling- and that adds to the air of exotic beauty around her.

Cutie Mark: This

Special Talent: Mauti is a blood mage- a rare variety of magic that is seen, even among the zebra, as being taboo and seldom spoken of, let alone practiced. Mauti's specialty is the use of blood to form edged weapons, projectiles, snares, and garrottes. The more connected she is to the bleeder, the more refined her control is- making the most effective blood for her to use to craft her armaments as her own.

Faction: Officially, she is an agent of the Draconic Alliance- though she sees herself as having no allies besides herself.

Personality: Mauti is a fanatic- relentless, remorseless, and completely given over to her cause. No concept of self preservation, nor familial ties, nor friendships hinder her course of action, and once committed to an effort, Mauti will see it through or die in the attempt. This insatiable drive, more than anything else, is what makes her dangerous and garnered her reputation, as unlike every other form of life, she feels no instinct to defend herself, only the thrill of the hunt and the exquisite satisfaction of taking the blood of another and making it her own.

Bio: Mauti was born Nyota Mito to a tribe of Zebras living in the rolling prairies near what would eventually become the Longwall Coal Fields. Her childhood was mostly uneventful, though at an early age she accidentally discovered a talent for blood magic- something not seen in her tribe in generations. several tribal elders wanted to banish her for this reason, but the Chief felt that banishment would only guarantee she would become consumed with revenge, hone her magic to a nightmarish efficiency, and return to slay those that had betrayed her. To that end, the Chief encouraged her to explore her abilities, but under the proviso that she was absolutely never to use her magic on another zebra, or the penalty would be death. Nyota obeyed, and her life was content, even if it was not always easy.

When ponykind came exploring what, to them, was a wild frontier, Nyota as curious- and as a mare approaching adulthood, she found these strange creatures- so alike and yet different from Zebras- intriguing. While other zebras kept their distance, Nyota enjoyed spending time with the ponies, learning of their stories and rituals, and learning of the world away from her home. Unfortunately, tales and songs were not all the ponies brought with them- a terrible plague, which caused its victims to bleed unstoppably, had come to her homeland with the ponies. Her people had no resistance to the plague, and their rituals and superstitions did little to quell it. The Chief himself succumbed, and upon his death, the surviving elders blamed Nyota, saying it was her foul magic that had brought the disease to them. Nyota herself had caught the plague, but her magic prevented her from bleeding out as she could magically directed her own blood back into her veins. This enabled her to live long enough to develop antibodies- but mentally, she believed the elders were correct. And, when she discovered later that it was the ponies who had brought the illness, she became enraged, both at them and herself. They had brought it, but it was her efforts to understand and get along with them that had brought death to her people. She changed her name then, to Mauti Damu - Bleeding Death. When the Dragons came, Mauti willingly offered her services- but only in that their cause mirrored her own. She sees the Alliance as a necessary evil- though once she has purified her homeland so that zebras may return, her role in the Alliance will end, and anything that tries to take her home again will have a fearsome foe to contend with.

Connections to Others
Spoiler:
This is purely how Mauti views others and might not match with another character's views.

Family: Mauti has no surviving relatives.

Love Interest: Mauti is attracted to strength, cunning, or danger. She is particularly fond of predatory species or physically imposing species, and despises 'weakness'. She had a romantic relationship, if it can be called that, with Stampeding Tide at one point, though it eventually ended. Mauti still harbors feelings for Tide, though she dislikes his lack of cruelty and dislikes herself for having held feelings for him to begin with, as she sees emotional attachment as weakness.

Friends: Mauti has no real friends, as she is not the sort that endear themselves to others. She may have allies or acquaintances from time to time, but she doesn't view them as friends so much as resources to be used as she sees fit.

Allies: Tide and his crew are, for the moment, allies- though Mauti intensely dislikes some of the crew and sees her presence aboard the Dream more as a means to an end than any sort of social relationship.

Enemies: Absolutely anypony or anyone can be her enemy, though she is most hostile to ponykind.

Race: Pegasus

Name: Iron Sides

Gender: male

Appearance: Iron's coat is a light slate grey, smooth in tone, with no other colors splotched in or discolored patches. His mane is a deep, dark blue, and his eyes are a steely grey, with a piercing gaze that gives the impression he can see through anypony's pretenses. He is seldom seen outside of his Royal Guard armor, which he keeps pristine, perfectly polished, with not a single dent or a hair out of place.

It is a great annoyance to him that his mane is wavy and always appears unkempt, despite his great efforts to control it. As a flier, however, there is no real method to keep it contained, much to his perpetual chagrin. Iron is rarely seen without his armor, and on such occasions or for formal events, he is in his uniform. Only for medical exams or R&R is he ever out of armor and out of uniform- and on those rare days, he looks perpetually uncomfortable without them.

Image
Iron Sides, as close to relaxing as he ever gets

Faction: Peacekeepers

Personality: Iron Sides is a consummate professional, completely unflappable even amidst total chaos, and unwavering in his convictions... unlike his rogueish younger brother, Steel Stride. Iron's military career has been exceptional in spite of his family, as he has worked hard to distance himself from his brother and demonstrate that he can be a paragon of virtue and loyalty. He was initially enlisted in the Equestrian Guard, which served as the military police for the Royal Guard Corps, under (then) Commander Ardent Glory. when hostilites with the Alliance began, Iron Sides immediately enlisted, only to have Commander Glory refuse to accept his resignation. Instead, Glory transferred him, preserving his rank, into the fledgling Peacekeeper Navy, which Glory had been given command over as Rear Admiral. Iron Sides initially refused to maintain his rank, insisting he earn it- and for his efforts in a defensive action at the Longwall Coal Fields, he was promoted from ensign to sub-lieutenant. A month later, he was promoted again for the evacuation of Donkirk, which despite persistent Alliance raids, managed to completely empty the citizenry and even salvaged some of the dry dock equipment. His latest promotion came on the heels of an Alliance assault on Canterlot, as he and a small group of other officers managed to evacuate two wings of the castle that had been devastated by explosives.

Iron Sides' special talent is defensive tactics- he has a keen eye for defensible positions, tactical retreats, resisting sieges, and strengthening existing defensive positions. Though as a colt, this talent mostly made it nearly impossible to beat him in games of capture the flag, as an adult, his special talent has proven instrumental in the evacuations of Donkirk and Sorraiasov, the continued resistance of Taishu to Alliance raids, and more than once he has actively saved the life of a high ranking officer in the Peacekeepers hierarchy. Despite the dangerous nature of his assignments, Iron Sides has suffered no injuries in the field, a record he is very proud of. His Cutie Mark reflects this talent, as it is a badge emblazoned with the Scales of Justice.

Bio: Iron Sides is the oldest of two boys, and not long after his brother's birth, their mother passed away due to a lingering heart condition. Their father worked several odd jobs to try and keep the family going, but it meant he was never home- so Iron had to grow up fast. He tried to be a good role model for his little brother, Steel Stride, but the resentment at their father for never being home, and the grief from the loss of their mother, had made Steel a bit of a wild colt, and Iron simply didn't know how to handle it. Eventually, Steel left the family to pursue a lucrative, if unsavory, career- Iron, for his part, was still set on being an ideal role model, if not for his brother's benefit, than at least to undo the damage to the family name.

Connections to Others
Spoiler:
This is purely how Iron views others and might not match with another character's views.

Family: Iron has one sibling, Steel Stride. Though they are not exactly estranged, the two of them have very different ideas and goals. Both his parents are deceased, though he has one living uncle, a metal smith named Bronze Slag. He has a few distant cousins as well, but few of them keep in touch.

Love Interest: Iron Sides is in love with Dr. Honey Heart, though the two of them have a cordial relationship, as each recognizes their duty to their profession and the ponies that need them first. Iron's military career and Dr. Heart's medical career take necessary precedence, given the state of the war.

Friends: Iron is friendly with most Peacekeeper forces, particularly those serving on ships or with whom he has fought alongside in the past, most especially in the defense of Palomino, which he still sees as the highlight of his career.

Allies: Peacekeeper forces are obviously his allies, though there are a few nonaligned ponies he considers to be allies as well.

Enemies: The Alliance and its agents, as well as anypony who assist them in any way, Iron considers to be his enemy.
